Why Consider Dermal Fillers

Why Consider Dermal Fillers

A study published in the March 2006 edition of the American Journal of Aesthetic Surgery revealed that structural changes in the skin such as thinning of the dermis takes place seven to eight years before sagging is actually visible to the naked eye!

As skin ages it loses its elasticity and becomes less supple. As a result, lips can lose their fullness, lines can appear around the mouth and nose area, and cheeks can start to look sunken and hollow.

Dermal fillers, made from Hyaluronic Acid, are the most popular volume-enhancing treatments used to reduce facial lines and wrinkles and to restore plumpness to the lips and cheeks, redefining the shape of the face. Hyaluronic Acid is a natural component in the skin, giving skin its ‘bounce’ and water-retaining property.

Dermal fillers are growing in popularity; they are safe, long-lasting and they offer natural looking results. They enable doctors and specially trained aestheticians to restore the volume in the skin for a more youthful look. Lines and wrinkles are smoothed out and the skin appears plumper, fuller and younger. Dermal fillers can also be used for lip enhancement - a very popular and effective procedure for adding volume to the lip area.

The most important considerations when having dermal fillers should be safety, the expertise of the practitioner, and the products being used. It is therefore essential to visit only a reputable clinic and to ask who will be performing the treatment; what their qualifications are and how much experience they have. Ask what type of fillers will be used, and whether they are permanent or temporary, so that you are able to make an informed choice. In my opinion temporary fillers are safer and the results are more predictable. Should the clinic suggest a brand that you do not recognize, ask for more information about the company producing them.

The treatment itself takes about 30 minute. Small amounts of the dermal filler are injected directly into the skin using an ultrafine needle. The gel helps to plump up the skin, thereby smoothing out lines and wrinkles. If the lips or facial contours are being treated, the filler adds volume, restores shape and gives a fuller appearance.

The smooth consistency of the products allows your medical practitioner to administer them easily and smoothly. In addition, most dermal fillers include an added anesthetic such as Lidocaine which makes the treatment virtually painless.

Dermal fillers work instantly so you’ll see the results straight away. The effects will fade gradually but should last between 4 and 12 months depending on the treatment, at which point you can return for a further treatment. Should you decide not to continue with the injections, the gel will biodegrade in the skin and will simply disappear.

You may experience slight redness, tenderness and swelling around the treated area immediately after the injection, and you might also feel an itching sensation. All side effects should subside after a couple of hours. Remember, 12 hours after the procedure you can cover up any skin discoloration with make-up.

The perfect filler will be affordable, safe, and with a low risk of allergies or side effects; and above all it will provide a predictable, long-lasting and natural result.
