Dermal Fillers for Men

Dermal Fillers for Men

The thought of going ’under the knife’ to get rid of wrinkles and add volume to the face seems quite frightening to many, however another and certainly less intensive option is dermal fillers. In the past decade alone, changes in advanced aesthetic skincare technology make it possible for men to undergo dermal filler treatments without detracting from their masculinity.

Men have bigger bone structure and do not gravitate or age in the same way that women do and as a result the volume loss is more significant in men than in women. Therefore utilising dermal fillers in a man, who has thicker skin and who can allow for more volume restoration, will have a significant improvement. Men therefore may be better candidates for dermal fillers alone without lifts than women.

Fillers are a critical part of restoring the ageing face, however they are not the sole component. It depends on how much of the ageing face is caused by gravitational changes, hence needing a lift; and how much is caused by loss of volume, hence needing to be treated with dermal fillers. One must also consider skin elasticity, which can be treated with laser, peels, dermabarasion, etc.

These three considerations are the key to a natural appearance, and not one overcompensating the other, thus avoiding a distorted look. A highly qualified aesthetic practitioner will know all three aspects of the process.

One of the top reasons men choose dermal fillers is to address bags under the eyes and hollow upper cheeks. Though bags under the eyes may be ones primary concern, the main issue is likely mid-face volume loss. Volume loss in the mid-face can cause the cheeks to look hollow and also increase that sunken look under the eyes.

A study published in the American Journal of Aesthetic Surgery revealed that structural changes in the skin such as thinning of the dermis takes place seven to eight years before sagging is actually visible to the naked eye! As skin ages it loses its elasticity and becomes less supple. As a result, lips can become thinner, lines can appear around the mouth and nose area, and cheeks can start to look sunken and hollow.

Dermal fillers are made from Hyaluronic Acid, and are the most popular volume-enhancing treatments. The are used to reduce facial lines and wrinkles, and to restore volume to the lips and cheeks, redefining the shape of the face. Hyaluronic Acid is a natural component in the skin, giving skin its ‘bounce’ and water-retaining property.

Dermal fillers are growing in popularity; they are safe, long-lasting and they offer natural looking results. They enable doctors and specially trained aestheticians to restore the volume in the skin for a more youthful look. Lines and wrinkles are smoothed out and the skin appears plumper, fuller and younger.

The most important considerations when having dermal fillers should be safety, the expertise of the practitioner, and the products being used. It is therefore essential to visit only a reputable clinic and to ask who will be performing the treatment; what their qualifications are and how much experience they have. Ask what type of fillers will be used, and whether they are permanent or temporary, so that you are able to make an informed choice.

The treatment itself takes about 30 minute. Small amounts of the dermal filler are injected directly into the skin using an ultrafine needle. The smooth consistency of the products allows your medical practitioner to administer them easily and smoothly. In addition, most dermal fillers include an added anesthetic such as Lidocaine which makes the treatment virtually painless.

Dermal fillers work instantly so you’ll see the results straight away. The effects will fade gradually but should last between 4 and 12 months depending on the treatment, at which point you can return for a further treatment. Should you decide not to continue with the injections, the gel will biodegrade in the skin and will simply disappear.

You may experience slight redness, tenderness and swelling around the treated area immediately after the injection, and you might also feel an itching sensation. All side effects should subside after a couple of hours.

The perfect filler should be affordable, safe, and with a low risk of allergies or side effects; and above all should provide a predictable, long-lasting and natural result.
